Galahad Cried is a novel based upon the true story of the adventurous life and loves of Bert Harper, a country boy who became a close friend of future Prime Minister of Canada, William Lyon Mackenzie King. The book portrays the various pitfalls and fortunes of Bert’s extensive career situations with aspects of political intrigue through heart-rending experiences as a newspaper reporter and bon vivant as he strives to be an honourable person. In an ironic twist of fate, his own honour is his undoing in the ultimate and final test of his life. The Galahad Statue in Ottawa, the National Capital of Canada, was erected by the city’s grateful public in 1905 to commemorate Bert Harper’s bravery.
Galahad Cried eBook Roy Mayer
This is fictionalized biography of a Canadian hero, Bert Harper, who died in 1901 while trying to save a companion from drowning in the frozen Ottawa River. He had been a journalist and known as a champion of labor, living his life based on the principles of chivalry and fairness. The book is written in the first person as if it were an autobiography covering from Harper's childhood memories while growing up in Barrie, Ontario, up until his death in Ottawa. A recurring theme throughout the book is Harper's belief in honesty, chivalry, and staying true to one's principles in all things. The writing style and level makes this book a good choice for young adult readers, although it might be considered slow-moving or superficial by some older readers.
I'll confess that in all the time I spent in Ottawa and the Parliament Hill and Wellington Street areas in particular, I'd never noticed the statue that was raised and dedicated to Bert Harper's attempted rescue nor had I heard of his story. I'd probably walked past it many times without it registering. I wish a photograph of the statue had been included in the book; it might have jogged my memory of having walked past it. Next time there, I'll be sure to look for Galahad's statue.
Recommended for young adult readers, those interested in history, and those interested in reading about examples of true life, everyday heroes and selfless actions.

Galahad Cried eBook Roy Mayer Reviews
I finished Galahad Cried - and loved it!! I actually could hardly put it down. I read the Kirkus Review and I didn`t find it started slow at all - I was captured as soon as Bert started his first job. The history was fascinating and I used to hate history in school! Anyway, I`m disappointed the book had to end. I thought the writing was beautifully creative - Roy Mayer's descriptions were unique - and then there was that little X-rated part there, eh.... where Rev. Clovis Publow made people give, give, give and then give some more!! Woohee! And as far as Bert not being faithful, I was not rooting for Rose anyway, after she put her boyfriend up to hitting Bert for money. I think she should have stood up to her parents if it was true love on her part, but then what do I know about the early 1900s. And I found myself glad that he had decided to put his career first even before she did that.
